Economics Summer Camp
NUS ECONOMICS CAMP
On June 22nd, 2019, a group of thirteen students set out for the Economics camp at the National University of Singapore accompanied by Mrs Patil.
Over the period of one week, this residential programme offered the students a one of a kind opportunity to not only interact with renowned professors but also to experience the ‘on-campus life’ and fuel our entrepreneurial imagination.
Through an enriching combination of lectures, visits, as well as group activities, the students’ knowledge and curiosity for Economics was developed further. The lectures gave the students an insight into the different fields and sub-fields of Economics and exposed them to topics they had never learnt before.
In the opening speech by Dr Seet, one of the directors of the camp, we got a basic overview of what the following week would be like. He explained to us the basic economic problems and introduced to us the economic way of thinking.
Different aspects of global trade and correlations between various countries through International Economics were explored.
Behavioural Economics which studies the effects of psychological and cognitive factors on the economic decisions of individuals and institutions was taught by Professor Kang.
The Business Plan workshop was the most interactive and brain-racking workshop of the camp. A combination of innovation, entrepreneurial skills and late-night brainstorming lead to a unique business model being created by every group using the skills and tips taught to us in this workshop. At the end of the workshop, three of the best business plans were selected to present their idea in front of a panel of judges.
The students also had the privilege of visiting the Singapore Stock Exchange as well as the Monetary Authority of Singapore along with a tour of Singapore.
This camp helped the students build on essential skills like teamwork and collaboration and taught them that independence does not come without responsibility. Their views in economics have been broadened and cultural learning and been enhanced.
